Le décor architectonique de Nantes (Loire-Atlantique), chef-lieu de cité des Namnètes

Abstract : The architectural decoration of Nantes, the administrative center of the city-state of Namnètes, is little known, however, the discovery of several architectural elements in the 19th and 20th centuries gives an outline of the strategies of the stone supply of the antique city. A systematic examination of the rocks used in the architectonic environment and a series of samplings carried out within the framework of a doctoral thesis enabled us to characterize and distinguish various different types of granite and limestone. If the former has a local provenance, the latter was imported. The investigation of the provenance of the limestone must be continued, but it already seems that some of it probably came from Anjou, and some presumably from Saintonge, while some of it was extracted in Nivernais and illustrates the distribution of the production of certain quarry centers in the Early Roman Empire as far as the Loire estuary.
