La littérature au contemporain. Entre pratique stratégique et réflexion sur le temps dans les lettres chez Hans Mayer

Abstract : Hans Mayer's relationship to contemporary literature may be interpreted on two levels. On the one hand, it contributes to Mayer's integration in the Western literary and academic fields; on the other hand, it is related to Mayer's conception of literary history. This essay explores the variations in the use of the term "contemporary" since the early 1960s. Echoing his productive reading of Hegelian philosophy, Mayer's conception of contemporaneity can be interpreted as the self-reflexive side of his thinking of literary history. The comparison with Walter Höllerer's multi-institutional practice and the reference to his connection with the Gruppe 47 allow Mayer's position in the literary establishment and the academic field to be located between modernity and anachronism. The question of the duration and durability of literature, which is a guiding principle in Mayer's thoughts on literary history, runs through the essay.
